This year, at the “Step into the Future” forum in Moscow, 3 young women represented the Foundation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg (FJSL)!
Anna Batmanova (18), Kajal Karki (19) and Jennifer Michael (17) came up with the project “Degradation of plastic polymers using genetically modified bacteria” in order to reduce plastic pollution by using genetically modified E-coli.
They hypothesized that the “culture of modified E-coli containing both the PETase and MHETace enzymes will work most efficiently at breaking down PET…” The students did not have access to a lab due to the pandemic, however, they managed to win the first ever “Step Into The Future” prize from the National Jonk Fuerscher Contest!
This was the 2nd virtual competition involving participants from 23 different countries. One of the students, Jennifer, states “Step Into The Future was a new experience as we got to see so many participants from around the world with interesting ideas and their application into the real world even during this pandemic. It was truly inspirational.”
