Local Spotlight: Volio, a Corner of Italy in the Heart of Differdange

by City Savvy Luxembourg

On November 14th the Volio pop up shop opened its doors in the heart of Differdange. Volio was founded by Alice Tiberio in January of 2011 with the goal of creating a bridge between her family’s home grown products from their orchard in Rimini, Italy and her home abroad.

Volio offers Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Infused Oils (think lemon, chili pepper, herbs and spices), strawberry jam and tomato sauce all coming directly from their family farm. But this is not all they have to offer, they continue to play with their ingredients to develop new recipes and products. As a result, in early 2021 you will be able to find apple juice from the current harvest as well as an extremely spicy Carolina Reaper infused olive oil. As the harvests roll on Volio’s offerings will continue to evolve as well bringing you more delicious fruit-based creations and perhaps a few cases of their limited edition wines.

The Tiberio orchard extends over 30 hectares in the hills of Rimini, in the region of Emilia-Romagna and is organized as a polyculture that ranges from vineyards, olive, almond, apple, peach and apricot trees; as well as fields of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. They also dedicate themselves to select seasonal vegetables such as San Marzano tomatoes.

In 2011 Alice was living in the USA, in her husband’s hometown of Seattle Washington. Alice decided that living and working abroad (Vancouver, Seattle, Luxembourg) meant that she could introduce food lovers to her orchard even if she was overseas. She decided to bring her dream to life and started the long road to becoming an expat ambassador for her family’s orchard. She began to attend farmers’ markers and to partner with local chefs who trusted Volio extra virgin olive oils to cook and create new dishes. Her journey gave her family products a stage at the world famous Pike Place Market and even a sponsored tasting event during the Seattle Major League Baseball playoffs against New York Yankees; something she never would have imagined.

Where can you find Volio?

Volio is primarily an online business and is based in Junglinster, all the products can be found at www.volio.eu, ordering is simple and delivery is speedy with a three day nationwide delivery; they are also present on the Letzshop platform.

They are open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10am-6pm, and on the last day of the shop (December 24th) they will be open until midday. You can meet Alice there and learn more about her products and their journey to Luxembourg.

You can follow also Volio’s social media pages (Instagram/Facebook) to see where else they will be ‘popping up’ especially once these difficult times pass and the farmers markets are reopened.
